Having been married to an ex-landscape gardener for nearly 20 years now, I’m no longer surprised by the process involved in creating a beautiful garden. Much like the expression “If you want to make an omelette, you have to break a few eggs.”, if you want to transform your garden, you have to be prepared to make a mess first.
Sometimes, creating a beautiful garden means cutting hedgerows back so that they look sparse and unpromising. Other-times, it means making what seems like muddy chaos before re-forming the space into something wonderful. In every case, it takes time to do the work and time for the plants and flowers to grow and look as you’d want them to.
Personal growth can be very much like this. If you’ve never taken time to question your thoughts or your emotions before, then you might find that process of self-discovery quite uncomfortable at first. Digging out the weed of negative thought patterns and unhelpful coping behaviours takes time and is often messy and hard. There's a reason for the expression "Ignorance is bliss." Pretending everything is fine can often be so much easier than facing hard truths and digging in to create something better. However, if you stick with it, using the right tools and the right help, then you can create a life that is so much more beautiful and enjoyable than blissful ignorance would have you expect.
As somebody who has been through their own fairly steep learning curve in terms of emotional and personal growth, I would encourage you not to give up at the messy stage. Things might look worse than before but, chances are, they are the foundations of a wonderful new future, if you are brave enough to push through and do the work needed.
As a life coach, I want to invite you to get in touch if you feel you could do with some tools and some support in creating that new future that you are seeking.
You can do this and I’m here for you if you need somebody on your side as you do.
