Did you know that you shouldn’t harvest asparagus until the third year of it growing?
Apparently, if you take freshly-grown asparagus spears before their time, you’ll potentially kill the plant or stunt its growth for the future.
It took considerable patience to watch seemingly tasty asparagus develop into an inedible flower head for 2 summers, before my husband and I could start eating our asparagus crops!
It occurs to me that this kind of patience is often required elsewhere in life. Perhaps we’re yearning for a promotion at work or a bigger home. Yet, we know that we need time to gather a few more months of experience or some extra funds before taking that leap. That wait can feel hard.
So, what can we learn from our asparagus-growing friends?
1) There’s a reason poet Violet Fane’s words “Good things come to those who wait.” have become so frequently spoken. This phrase is a life principle that we all need to accept at times. You are not alone.
2) Keep in mind the long-term goal and the bigger benefits of investing time and effort in developing the future you really want, to help you hold fast and avoid sabotaging that by giving in too soon.
3) Consider what short-term wins might make the long-term waits easier. My husband and I grow other vegetables that we were able to pick every year during the wait for asparagus. Perhaps your equivalent is to start researching the home that you really want now or simply focusing on the pleasure of training and developing as you prepare for the role of your dreams?
